* Beyond Survival
Door Martin G Okkerse, 2026
70cm x 50cm x 6cm
This expressive pastel diptych explores the human reality of poverty through the portraits of a child and a woman. Rather than illustrating poverty as a statistic or social issue, the work focuses on the dignity, resilience, and emotional strength of those living within its reality. Their gazes speak of hardship, endurance, and an unspoken hope that survives despite uncertainty. The layered use of colour, light, and texture reflects both vulnerability and inner resilience. Emerging from dark, abstract surroundings, the figures become symbols of countless unseen lives, inviting viewers to look beyond material deprivation and recognise the humanity that remains untouched by circumstance. This work is an invitation to pause, to empathise, and to acknowledge that behind every face shaped by poverty is a story of courage, dignity, and the enduring desire for a better future.
