To measure is to know

To Measure Is to Know consists of a subtly deformed geometric object coated in industrial Hammerite paint and fitted with multiple spirit levels. The object is presented on a minimal jewelry display support, creating the illusion that it hovers in space.  Spirit levels conventionally function as instruments of certainty, orientation, and objective verification. In this work, however, they lose their reliability. Because the geometry itself is distorted and lacks a stable relation to gravity, the different levels produce contradictory orientations. The object appears measurable while simultaneously undermining the conditions that make measurement meaningful.  The work explores the tension between rational systems of knowledge and the instability of the frameworks on which such systems depend. Rather than presenting a symbolic opposition between science and spirituality, the sculpture questions the assumption that reality can ever be fully stabilized through technical measurement or objective reference systems.  Through minimal means, the work creates a condition of perceptual and epistemological uncertainty in which no single point of orientation remains trustworthy.
