Conditioned Entry

Door Christophe Muylaert, 2026

40cm x 50cm

A black purse is presented upright on a minimal support. At first glance, it appears as a functional, everyday object. Only upon closer inspection does a subtle intervention become visible: the two spherical knobs of the clasp have been cast in resin, fixing the mechanism in a permanently closed state. The purse can no longer be opened. The work targets the threshold of access. Rather than altering the object’s body, it intervenes precisely at the point where use is initiated. The condition of entry is preserved in form but neutralized in function. What remains is a system that signals accessibility while structurally preventing it. This minimal gesture produces a shift in ontological status. The purse moves from a use-object to an object of display, from tool to sign. The transformation is not immediately apparent but unfolds through delayed recognition. The familiar becomes subtly inconsistent: an object that looks operable but is not. The work operates within the logic of constraint, where access is not denied outright but conditioned in such a way that it can never occur.
